General information

The Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection is one of 12 faculties at the University of Silesia in Katowice. We are located in Katowice in two buildings, one on 28 Jagiellonska Street and the other on 9 Bankowa Street.

We are arranged into 13 departments and our research focusses on four main areas: Experimental Biology, Phylogeny and Developmental Processes in Animals, Ecology and Nature Protection, Environmental Biotechnology, and Plant Biotechnology and Experimental Biology. The Laboratory of Optical and Electron Microscopy supports not only our own research but also external users. Each year we publish about 130 scientific publications in JCR-indexed journals, including the best, such as Nature, Nature Communications, PNAS, Journal of Experimental Botany, etc. Our research is funded not only by a statutory grant of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education but also by about 75 individual grants funded by the National Science Centre, the National Centre of Research and Development, etc. This includes grants from prestigious schemes, such as Maestro and Harmonia.

Our teaching is organised into four majors: Biotechnology (3-year BSc and 2-year MSc level), Biology (3-year BSc and 2-year MSc level), Environmental Protection (3-year BSc and 2-year MSc level), and Food and Nutrition Biology (2-year MSc level only). Selected modules in each of these majors can be taught in English. We also offer a 4-year PhD level scheme “Advanced Methods in Biotechnology and Biodiversity”, which is taught exclusively in English. Teaching is supported by the Laboratory of Biological Education.
